Team Players

The requisite ego of men and women who seek the presidency is such that they sometimes think lower office is beneath them. I get that. These are alpha dogs. They don't want to be ordered around by a blogger with a megaphone. Got it.

And I will reiterate that I am not even a Republican, I just vote that way by default given the sorry excuses for human beings who now hold office for the other party. And I have a thing about career politicians having an impact on this country our forefathers never envisioned. With those disclaimers out of the way, something can be said for people who have paid their dues to their party.

If Michelle Bachmann (or Sarah Palin for that matter) are finished with politics, good for them. Two ladies who paid their dues. However, if Bachmann seeks higher office later I will hold it against her that she did not challenge the vulnerable Al Franken. Palin's situation is different. The GOP seems to have a good chance of defeating Mark Begich--a man who came to power only because of his family name and bogus charges leveled against Ted Stevens. But if Begich hangs on, that is a mark against future candidate Palin.

I am disturbed by the Ben Carson for president movement. If Donald Trump was in the mix, I would say the same things about him.  Yes, we should recruit from diverse backgrounds. In the old days, almost every public official had a real job (as opposed to a community organizer or an office hopper in gerrymandered districts.) LBJ was a teacher. Hubert Humphrey was a pharmacist. Mayor Daley worked in the stockyards. Ronald Reagan was an actor. Job experience was the norm.

That is not to say one should entirely skip public office. Dwight Eisenhower would not win a primary today. Times change.

There are three basic reasons why a candidate should hold public office before seeking the White House:

1. If a candidate has any bone chips in his closet (Herman Cain) they need to be exposed before they hit the Iowa State Fair.

2. No matter how good a campaigner one might be, the presidency is a different game (Rick Perry 2012.)

3. The challenges of the presidency are daunting and ideally one would hold public office before taking on the big job. I agree with Ann Coulter that a governor or even a big city mayor brings executive experience that legislators do not attain. I am slow to disqualify all Senators and Congressmen but I understand the executive bias.

If Ben Carson seeks the presidency in 2016, I cannot support him. In part because he is not ready for prime time and would get tripped up on the campaign trail and in part because he is not a team player. If he was serious about spreading his values into the public arena he would not sit out Congressional and Gubernatorial races in his home state of Maryland. He might also consider seeking the Senate in 2016.

Donald Trump is a publicity seeker at heart and I doubt if he would run for president if he had other means of staying in the spotlight. Should he seek the big job after backing off from multiple New York Senate and Governor's races, I for one will not support him. Not a team player.

So Mitt Romney is running again in 2016? Ho hum. If Mitt challenged Ed Markey for his Senate seat I would see him in another light. If he defeated Markey, even better. Unfortunately, Mitt is not a team player.

I am no Jeb Bush fan but had he defeated--or even just challenged-- Bill Nelson in 2012,  I would have some respect for the man. Jeb Bush, not a team player.

Gary Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico who was both popular and controversial, might have won a Senate seat in 2012. Instead, he became the Libertarian candidate. Why? I have no idea. He could have challenged again in 2014. Nope. Not just a non-team player, also a series of bad career moves.

I doubt if Pataki or Giuliani get back into the mix but if they do, I would say the same thing about them. Herman Cain is a resident of Georgia and the GOP has a lock on most state offices so maybe we can give him a pass. Gingrich is a resident of Virginia. Santorum is, oh who cares about Santorum?

If the GOP does not take the Senate in 2014, we might take a long look at the prima donnas who sat on the sidelines, sometimes for multiple elections. In 2016, the GOP needs to support a team player

Take this with a grain of salt. I am not a registered Republican and I don't plan to be one anytime soon. But given the state of affairs in this country, I recognize that your party can lay claim to the "lesser of two evils." With all of your sins, you are downright saintly compared to your corrupt, destructive, Anti-American rivals.

I have four general suggestions that are so obvious that I don't think anyone would disagree with them.

1. Establish a fighter as Chairman of The Republican National Commitee.

2. Establish a fighter as Speaker of the House.

3. Don't just acknowledge voter fraud, fight it.

4. Permanently change your relationship with the national media.

I am going out of order as I am wont to do (I told you I am not a Republican.) Fight voter fraud! If James O'Keefe can find repeated efforts at voter fraud on his ramen noodle budget, why can't an organization with a $50 million operating budget find an act of impropriety when it is right under your nose?

If you stated that henceforth 10% or 20% of your budget would be devoted to fighting voter fraud, your donations would increase sufficiently to offset this new expenditure. Try holding just one anti-fraud money bomb. Ron Paul generated over $10 million in 24 hours in 2007 during the first-ever money bomb. Try it! You might be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.

Your party still controls the House. Why is there not a permanent committee on voter integrity? Cleveland, Ohio had precincts that voted one hundred per cent for Obama. In the real world such things do not happen if for no other reason, people inadvertently fill in the wrong name or scribble in the wrong circle. No human error in Cleveland.

What is frustrating about Cleveland is that Ohio has a Republican governor. He did have the resources at his disposal to prevent voter fraud. Did he deploy the State Police or the Attorney General to disrupt these crimes?

Did Port Saint Lucie County, Florida really have a 141% voter turnout? If yes, the FBI should be descending into the Sunshine State in droves. Maybe that number is wrong. But if the number is only 101%, there needs to be a criminal investigation. If the White House has the DOJ handcuffed, there is still Congress and yes, there is still the State of Florida.

Again, Florida is frustrating because Republicans control the Governor's Office and the Republican AG is all over the national news shows. They were in a position to prevent this from happening. They are now in a position to make sure it never happens again. Voter fraud must be stopped, priority numbers one through one hundred.

Jumping back to the first suggestion. You need a fighter as Chairman of RNC. I don't think Priebus is that guy. If his chairmanship is challenged, maybe it will light a fire under his ass, even if he is not successfully deposed.

What is needed is someone like Newt Gingrich. I say someone like Gingrich because Newt is a loose cannon and he would turn off some donors. But Newt does know how to win elections. He is never afraid to speak the truth and he will call voter fraud, voter fraud. Newt will not be intimidated by a false charge of racism or misogyny. You need his pugnacious spirit if not his physical presence. Newt? Palin? You need a heavyweight in this position.

Now let us focus on The Speaker of The House. We will know real soon if Boehner is the right choice. I think he might be if only because it does not serve his own future to cave on the "fiscal cliff" or Benghazi or Fast and Furious. Oh and if we are making a Christmas list we could add voter fraud investigations, illegal campaign financing investigations, and defunding NPR, PBS and anything related to General Electric to our already long string of requests.

We will know soon if Boehner is our guy. If not, a new candidate should challenge the incumbent.

Lastly, change forever your relationship with the press. Do not talk to the national press. Let it be known that you will not fund any candidate who talks to the national media. If they want to talk to the media from their home district, they should do so at their own discretion.

As long as your candidates talk with the national press, they are putting their seal of legitimacy on the pro-Obama media. Why, oh why, oh why would you allow your candidates to subject themselves to Gregory or Stephanopolos and to pummel them with "do you still wage war on women?" kinds of questions. Furthermore, do not allow the national media to moderate your primary debates! Duhhh.

There was a time when it was essential to converse with the national media. That day has passed. Twitter and Facebook changed the rules forever. You and your candidates and your office holders can communicate with an audience unimpeded by charges of racism, misogyny, fraud or murder. You cannot win with the pro-Obama media. They must be shunned!

Shunning is the first step. With the rise of cable and satellite and Internet delivery, local network affiliates struggle. However, they have benefited nicely from election commercials. The affiliates are now dependent on this revenue stream. Let it be known that the GOP will not spend a penny with NBC affiliates in either 2014 or 2016.

The GOP candidates will not suffer by boycotting NBC affiliates. The GOP will continue to buy air time from ABC and CBS and Fox affiliates as well as independent channels and cable outlets. But NBC is 86. Of course, everything NBC (The Weather Channel, Telemundo, NBC Entertainment, NBC News) will also be cut off. And as previously suggested, if Congress defunded General Electric's lucrative government contracts, I bet we would see a greater respect for truth at every NBC venue.

There you have it. I am no genius but I can point out the obvious, something your brain trust has failed to do. Then again, I am not a Republican.

Sexism Exists And We Have To Acknowledge It

As much as I love Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann I am not sure I can wholeheartedly support either one of them. We live in a sexist world and we have to come to grips with it if we want to defeat a man who is either the biggest buffoon in American History or the Manchurian President. Obama has got to go and if it means holding my nose for Perry or Romney, I will do so.

At this time we should recognize two truths that are self evident. 1. People are inherently sexist. 2. Women are more sexist than men.

Why are there fewer women than men in elected offices? Because women do not vote for women. In the 2006 Massachusetts Gubernatorial election, Deval Patrick beat Kerry Healey by 20 points. Among male voters, it was a tight race. But the suffragettes turned out in force to put their sister back in the kitchen where she belongs. This pattern is usually repeated when women run male opponents.

If Sarah Palin could run on her record, she would probably win the GOP nomination. She removed unsavory elements from her own party. She negotiated some tough deals with the big, bad oil companies. Perhaps most importantly, she left her state with one of the largest budget surpluses in US History. On a per capita basis, the surplus was Secretariat at a turtle race. There are no close seconds.

The Dems are possibly more sexist than the GOP. Hillary wss infinitely more qualified than the sophomoric community organizer but the latter was more "presidential" (insert laugh track here.) But the NeoCons/Republicans, etc., are even more hostile to women. Rove, Babbin, Krauthammer, et al, hate women candidates in general and Sarah Palin in particular. It's the lay of the land.

Tonight, Jed Babbin was hosting a "Jerry Doyle Show." Doyle is usually unlistenable but he had a guest host tonight so I listened to Babbin bash Palin mercilessly. He hates her to such a degree that I suspect he has a closet crush on Obama. He started the hour bashing Rove and Palin. He then played a clip of Rove bashing Palin. It was MSNBC grade material.

Babbin then blathered on that if Palin was smart she should have studied under historian Paul Johnson or Ambassador Bolton to elevate her intellect. He then praised Perry and Rubio (the Rubio praise is really wearing thin with me.) OK, did Perry trapise off to England to be tutored by Paul Johnson? Did Rubio? Did either of these geniuses have a private office with John Bolton? I kind of doubt it.

When Babbin talks about Rubio he reminds the listener of Chris Matthews discussing his biological reaction to Barack Obama. It is nauseating and he isn't the only one. I used to like Rubio but all this balderdash about Rubio being a VP candidate gives me the chills. He is possibly less experienced than Obama was when he ran for president. He might be qualified to be the president in waiting in a few years but for now, he is too green.

The Rubio fan club sound a lot like Obots. He's so good looking and he's so smart and he would be the first Hispanic...Take a cold shower, boys. America got an inexperienced HISTORICAL FIRST in 2008 and are we better off because of it?

Rubio, Christie, Perry and every other Y-Chromosone political figure will be viewed more favorably than Palin or Bachmann or Brewer. I'm not sure there's anything we can do about that. But America is on the road to Hasbeensville and if Obama wins another election, there will be no turning back. We will join Portugal and Spain and the Dutch on the shelf of once-powerful nations and we will remind passersby that we used to matter. We used to be somebody. Somebody important. We used to be.

If the choice is so stark that we must decide to defeat sexism or to defeat Obama, I will choose the latter. Sexism is sometimes a drag but truth is, we get used to it. But can we get used to Mr. Smug and his legions of destroyers?

Not me!

The more Palin is ridiculed by the media elite, the more she needs to be considered as a presidential candidate. Suitability for the highest office in the land is inversely proportionate to media affection. The Pampered One still gets his tender areas kissed while Uncle Sam drowns in red ink and awaits his leaden life preserver. How bad could the media's favorite enemy possibly be?

Governor, you do not need these people. These are not honest, reputable peeople and please, please, please do not make the mistake your running mate made. Do not think that they can ever be trusted. Why not bypass the MSM and release your editorials from your own site? That might not be a viable strategem for Harold Pudnik, but you, Governor, are no Harold Pudnik.

I propose that all Republican Party officials, office holders and candidates boycott the mainstream media at least through the 2012 elections. That is, they refrain from speaking with all members of the news media and they no longer advertise in the mainstream media. There was a time just a few years ago when adopting such a strategy would be political suicide. Now, failure to adopt such a strategy is political suicide.

Anyone who has read Bernard Goldberg's “A Slobbering Love Affair” or has viewed “Media Malpractice” or has just paid attention knows that media are stacking the deck for Obama. Even now, roughly 100 days into the Obama Administration, we know more about Joe the Plumber than we do Barack Hussein Obama.

We don't know what Obama wrote as an undergrad. We don't know the identity of hundreds of his donors. We don't know why a Chicago hospital would pay Mrs. Obama over $300k to fulfill the duties of a Diversity Director. We don't know much about Obama's relationship with Ayers and Dohrn and Rezko and Khalidi. We don't know much about ACORN but what we do know is pretty disturbing if you oppose voter fraud. We hear a lot about the collapse of this company or that but we don't hear much about Obama's close associates who played a significant role in the collapse of Fannie Mae.

Can anyone say with a straight face that Sarah Plain and Barack Obama were treated identically by the media? Even after the election they are trying to dig up dirt on Palin's family. Meanwhile, Obama's life is one long puff piece. His titanic budget is barely scrutinized.

To paraphrase Bernard Goldberg, if the referees of the Michigan-Ohio State football game decided that it would make for a better story if Michigan won and they called the game in such a way as to determine the outcome, there would be public outrage. But it would not just be the Ohio State fans who would be angry. The Michigan fans would be furious as well. People know full well that if referees determine the outcome of a football game, you no longer have football. If the referees of democracy determine elections, you no longer democracy.

So how would candidates receive exposure without appearing on “Larry King Live” or “Meet the Press?” Answer: Republicans need to form their own channels of communication on the Internet. Republicans need to move underground. Let the Democrats have the Associated Press fed newspapers. Let them have the alphabet networks, including Fox. If a member of the media elite wishes to speak to you, Mr. GOP candidate, about this or that, refer them to your website.

As an extension to the “no press” policy, GOP voters should boycott, banish or vote against any candidate who purchases newspaper ads or TV spots. Those candidates are cuddling up to the enemy. Worse, they are funding the enemy. Let the seal clubbers buy their own bats.

Of course the websites will have to sparkle. They have to look professional. They will have to be compelling. The mainstream media will not simply close up shop. They will dredge the websites in search of the smallest inaccuracy, the tiniest gaffe, the silliest blunder. They will need to contrast the ways of mere mortals with the ways or their messiah. When the mainstreamers lose their editing powers, they will work more diligently to find damaging material. They will still show images of Republicans on CNN so long as the image is a flattering portrait of a RINO—or an unflattering portrayal of a principled candidate.

To continue on the current course is to throw in the towel. Let us be reminded that the mainstream media did not just fix the presidential election, they fixed both presidential primaries as well. The biggest obstacle to change (Shhh. Obama has that word copyrighted but I want to use it just one time. Don't tell the White House.) would be the Idiot McCains who still think they can charm the news media. Note to all future Idiot McCains: These people are your enemies. They love John McCain now because he lost and lost graciously. He played by their rules even as they stacked the deck against him. They see a beautiful loser. We see a loser.

What would be the impact of a GOP media boycott? The first benefit would be a media event in and of itself. It might, maybe, possibly, force the media to confront their unfettered bias. It might open a dialog about the media coverage in the 2008 election. Maybe the sycophants would suspend their smooching long enough to participate in the dialog. We can dream, can't we?

Ultimately the impact would be financial. This would not be felt right away but by the November, 2010 it would get the accountants' attention. Even the suggestion of a media boycott would elicit tremors at newspapers and TV network affiliates. Station managers will not be heartened to learn that their favorite dupes have now invested in websites, dvd's and old fashioned mass mailings. Network affiliates count on GOP airtime purchases. If that money disappears they will spin excuses about the flat economy and Bush era economics that still hobble the industry. Newspapers are even more vulnerable. As well as the economic fallout from an advertisement boycott, the accompanying publicity will do nothing to upgrade newspaper credibility and might even hasten their timely demise.

The empire will strike back. They will conduct a divide and conquer strategy. “We like you, you Idiot McCain wannabe. Sit with us and we'll make sure you dust off your primary rivals. You are a regular guy and they are unwashed tea baggers. We love you.” But it will be a Faustian deal and Mephistopheles will take payment in November. Mephistopheles might be evil but he is not stupid.

Yes, there will be pitfalls in a media boycott but it must happen if the GOP is to regain any credibility. While the Republicans were farming players, the Democrats were farming referees. 2008 might be the high water mark of the elitist media but it is also the advent of a new style, form and structure of politics. The game will still be played, but it will be played without referees. We will be returning to the sandlots.

In the sandlot game everyone can play. Everyone except the referees.

The logic is mind-numbingly twisted. Because Palin has always been a punching bag of the media elite, she has no right to complain about Letterman's recent attacks. The window of protest has closed, decrees Shannyn Moore.

First, Ms. Moore, there was an upcoming election the first time the media bigwigs attacked her. Yes, there was overt bias and pronounced bile--that would have been labled hate speech if it had been directed against a media-sanctioned candidate--but it was in the context of a presidential election. It was extremely biased political speech but it was political speech nonetheless. It is harder to make that case against CBS's recent insults of a 14 year old girl.

Second, Palin could not possibly defend herself from the series of ambushes by the media elite. The sheer volume of those attacks amde it impossible to defend herself. No other public figure has been the lightning rod that was Palin 2008.

Thank you, Ms. Moore, for chronicling a series of attacks (the tip of the tip of the iceberg) against Sarah Palin and her family. Ironically you make the point that I have tried to make, that the media are in the tank for Obama and they will use every weapon in their arsenal to crush anyone who dares criticize their pampered superstar. You illustrate just how frequently and how visciously the smears piled up.

An Open Letter to Sarah Palin

Sever all ties with the mainstream media. Please don't repeat the mistake your running mate, John McCain, made. He thought he could trust the media to be fair. That judgment, or rather that lack of judgment, cost him dearly.

If you bank on "New York Times" to be fair, you deserve to lose. Remember the innuendo The Gray Lady spread about the senator and a certain lobbyist? Facts be damned! Do you remember the sleazy tabloid hit pieces that NYT used to smear Cindy McCain? This was the same organization that killed a highly relevant ACORN story just weeks before the election. All the news that's fit to spike.

Governor, you are a lightning rod because you share the values, hopes and dreams of most Americans. For that reason, elitists hate you. The media elite hate you even more. These are people who profess their love for working people but tremble at the possibility of a blue collar person holding public office. They despise working people, people who come from working families, people from small towns, people who did not attend the right schools and worst of all, they despise outsiders. As in, people from outside The Beltway.

But please do not grow discouraged by the slings and arrows of outrageous media. The fact that they hate you--and yes, they do hate you--shows the rest of us that you are probably a good person and possibly a worthy presidential candidate. Now is the time to show the effete snobs just how obsolete they really are. In an era of blogs, websites and digital video, you don't need the mainstream media for publicity. You can reach your audience directly.

We were all taken aback by Letterman's comments. But why did you appear on "The Today Show" later in the week? Granted, you are a ratings boost, and giving NBC face time sends a message to CBS. But pitting the media against one another won't work for very long. They maintain their genteel rivalries, but they will never be enemies. The members of Meadowbrook Polo Club do not pummel the members of the Oakbrook Polo Club with their trusty mallets. They hammer away at a little white ball and sip champagne with their competitors afterward. You will always be that little white ball. Keep that in mind.

But you don't have to show up at the polo grounds. Don't sit down with them! They can have the same access to your speeches and town hall meetings that everyone else has. Let them Twitter and Facebook and search Youtube. Do not participate in your own crucifixion.

Ironically, the mainstream media might help you in the long run. There are plenty of voters--like me or instance--who are uncomfortable with terms like liberal and conservative but who will vote against big media in a heart beat. When our enemies find a new enemy, it rekindles our interest in public affairs.

"I didn't come here to earn your good opinion." Live by your words, Governor Palin. Stop trying to earn their good opinion. Remember your next line. "I came here to serve the people of this great country." The choice is obvious. Serve your country or earn the media's good opinion. You cannot do both.

An Open Letter to David Letterman

Dave, I was once a big fan of yours. You were my hero. You were bold. Irreverent. Unpredictable. You defied categorization. You took a stale medium and turned it on its ear.

It wasn't just that you were funny. Other people could make that claim. You were different. You were, well, Dave. We bonded with you. We loved you in a way that we did not love entertainers, especially TV stars.

In the 80's the Letterman cult was loyal and devoted and I was pretty close to a charter member. Your fans were not typical TV fans. We were more like Deadheads or Phishheads or Red Sox Nation. Perhaps the only TV cult that surpassed the Letterman cult--in theatrics if not in fervor--was the "Star Trek" cult. But Trekkies never loved Shatner the way we loved you. We really loved you, Dave.

Maybe you were an elitist pig all along but you were able to disguise it. Maybe that man of the people thing was one big sham. It wasn't just your humor, it was your courage. If it was a movie star, an NBC hack or a big shot of any kind, you Dave, knocked them off their pedestal. You were the kid who made rude comments about emperors' clothing. David Letterman: Man of the People.

But somewhere along the way, Dave, you lost your edge. Maybe it was success. Maybe it was money. Maybe it was boredom. An unmistakable bitterness set in that competed with your humor. You took shelter in formula. For whatever reason, Dave, you lost your courage.

No comedian ever rose to the top without courage. None of them get where they got by charting the course of lesser resistance. Unfortunately, when they reach the top they usually start playing it safe. They grow rich and fat and spineless. Pusillanimity is their constant companion.

When the most pompous, the most pampered, the most inflated, the least analyzed, the least scrutinized, the least inspected, and yes, the least tested superstar in history emerged on the scene, the Dave we had grown to know and love was not there to greet him. You sold us out, Dave. You joined the legion of poltroonish cocksuckers. It is hard to imagine a vintage 85 Letterman taking Obama's engorged member to the lower depths of his esophagus. It is hard to imagine the angry young Dave wiping the jism from his lips and studying it under the moonlight. It is hard to imagine the NBC Dave savoring a septic peanut and proclaiming to the world that it tastes like cheese cake. But this is the Dave we have come to know. Dave, the slayer of superstars, had become a superstar. There are no clowns on Mount Olympus.

Dave, if your obsequiousness was nauseating for its cowardice, your attacks on Sarah Palin (to say nothing of her 14 year old daughter) were ruthlessly emetic. Somewhere along the way, simple cowardice was not enough for you. Yours was conspicuous cowardice. Contemptuous cowardice. Divert your eyes because it hurts to watch cowardice. There is something sadly ironic about your trashing Sarah Palin. That is, Palin 2008 came closer to capturing the spirit of Letterman 1984, than anyone, including the 2008 Letterman. It is easy to imagine a premenopausal Letterman pointing out that the man who would be king spent years wandering the streets with no actual responsibilities. It is not hard to imagine Dave in his prime poking fun of a man of marginal achievement writing two autobiographies. And yes, the Dave we grew up with would have had a field day with the hokey-ass styrofoam Greek columns. Palin 2008 had not yet lost her courage.

I cannot entirely stop loving you, Dave. You were my hero and when the mob ridicules my favorite has been, I am quick to remind them that you were once the funniest man in the world. But Dave, watching you now is like watching another has been, the formerly formidable Muhammad Ali. These days Ali walks like a butterfly and talks like a bee. Kind of like your monologues. But do remember, there is a major distinction between you two has beens. Ali never lost his courage and as a result, he stayed too long. You Dave, abandoned your courage, and because of that, you stayed too long.
