Idolatry Versus Ideology

Idolatry Versus Ideology

The news media do not usually cover news media. They are a club. They are perhaps the most insular profession in America. There might be pecking orders and rivalries and jealousy but they are good at keeping their grievances in-house. They like to refer to one another as colleagues.

Bernard Goldberg reminds us that there is no secret handshake. None is needed. In this finely-screened guild, dissidents are not recruited or welcomed. They often graduate from good schools but nonetheless they do have dimwits in their ranks. They are not necessarily stupid but they will consciously promote stupidity when duty calls.

Members of the news media are haughty and cavalier and every word in the thesaurus for both haughty and cavalier accurately describes them. No exceptions. They are parochial and provincial and every word in the thesaurus for both parochial and provincial accurately describes them. No exceptions.

Smugly superior, tirelessly loyal to their clan, secular in the extreme. Secularists are notoriously vulnerable to cult leaders. Offbeat religions have much better success recruiting at Harvard or Yale than at Brigham Young or Oral Roberts. The Cult of Obama would find the ranks of the secularist media to be their Happy Hunting Ground.

Observers might denounce media bias but they often mistake loyalty to proper noun for loyalty to principle. In the case of Barack Obama, idolatry is often mistaken for ideology. The Obamacist media practice unconditional love for their beloved leader.

A purely objective press has never existed. We have discussed press prejudices and how they have evolved over time. Yes, there has always been a bias against dissent, an endorsement of pack journalism for the good of the pack. What was absent until 2008 was an ongoing consensus on behalf of matters related to one man and his agenda.

The news media might have been chummy and sniffy but they were also independent. Even during times of war—World War II being the possible exception—news media expressed diverse viewpoints. That is no longer the case.

“Mysticism is unifying. Reason is divisive. “ So says Thomas Szasz. Ideology has its limits. An idea as simple as “the government should help the poor” immediately encounters an obstacle course. How do we help the poor? Should we first help those who help themselves? Should we first help those who cannot help themselves? Should we first help those who will not help themselves in hopes of lifting their spirits? Should we help poor people find work or just give them cash? Would it be better to give poor people food stamps and free education and subsidized housing than to give them cash? Should we help intact families more than single mothers or vice versa? Reason divides.

George Patton said, “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.” To that, our news media reply in unison “Yes we can!” For many journalists, Obamacism is their first religious experience. For most journalists, Barack Obama is the only deity they love and revere. For all members of the Fourth Estate, Obamacism is the only religion that matters.

Issues do not matter to the Obamacist. Candidate Obama excoriated President Bush for his profligacy, “two wars on a credit card...Bank of China credit card...” more references to credit cards, calling deficits unpatriotic, etc. President Obama would ultimately spend more rapidly and more recklessly than any president in history, arguably with little or nothing to show for it. The press are behind their deity all the way, They are zealots, not ideologues.

President Obama bears no resemblance to Candidate Obama in 2008 or even Candidate Obama in 2012 when the press adroitly assisted the incumbent in running against his own record. Republicans. The Tea Party. Congress. His rivals who acted as rivals. Rush Limbaugh. These entities all served as scapegoats for the Administration's ongoing failure. Never is anything the president's fault. Never.

The Obamacist media mob praised the Affordable Care Act without reading it. Through executive order and Secretarial fiat, the ACA morphed and shape shifted and evolved into something much different from its legislative form. The chorus backed their deity every step of the way. Changes in law were but words on paper. Love and worship of their leader is all that mattered.

Previous executives waffled or flip-flopped. Barack Obama pivots and grows and evolves. Never indecisive, always reflective. One Obamacist even coined a term to prop up their divinity: He leads from behind. Unconditional love. Unending loyalty. Consensus achieved.

Obamacism is a media-created, media-generated, media-fed religion. A land of skeptics found its savior. Finally, there was someone worthy of their deference. We will examine the techniques of persuasion and deception that made Obamacism possible. We need to reemphasize Obamacism's universal support from the Fourth Estate. Their unanimous, total and unending loyalty has made the impossible a reality.

MSNBC Spreads Malicious Rumors About Palin

Footnote to above smear: FBI announces that Palin is NOT under federal investigation.

The MSNBC clone piles it higher and deeper. Thanking the purveyor of blatant falsehood for her cautious reporting.

ABC and Obama, Part 1

Item: ABC employees donated 32 times more to the Obama campaign than they donated to McCain's campaign.

http://www.cprights.org/pdf/Obama-ABC.pdf

http://www.cprights.org/pdf/McCain-ABC.pdf

This coming June 24, ABC will host Obamapalooza. Diane Sawyer will kick things off with an Obama interview on "Good Morning America." Charles Gibson will anchor "World News" from the White House Blue Room. Gibson and Sawyer will then anchor a two hour prime time infomercial for Obama's health care plan. They will break for the local news and wrap up the day with a discussion of Obama's health care plan on "Nightline." I bet some Tivos will be working overtime.

Significantly, The Republican National Committee has been denied any input into the debate and has been denied any rebuttal. http://www.opposingviews.com/articles/opinion-abc-news-shills-for-obama-s-health-care-reform-r-1245261967

Does Brian Williams Think Kennedy Ran Against Eisenhower?

Let's be fair. It is possible that Williams misspoke. That he knew that Kennedy never ran against Eisenhower but that Nixon (Eisenehower's vice president) was an extension of the Eisenhower Administration. Maybe he accidentally misstated the facts. But he did not clarify as well as he should have.

Williams then repeats the analogy. And in the context, it appears that he does believe Eisenhower ran against Kennedy because McCain the war hero is sort of the political Eisenhower of his era. He is certainly comparing Eisenhower and McCain.

Is Williams a moron? If the standard is beyond reasonable doubt, he has a chance at acquittal. If the standard is a preponderance of evidence, the viewers and the voters will be rewarded damages.

Oh, and you might notice that Mensa member Dave does not correct his intellectual twin on his absurdities.

PALIN HAS NEVER UTTERED ANYTHING HALF THIS STUPID

Why is Palin So Threatening to the Media Elite.

Even in defeat Palin is still the object of hate for the upper crust.

THE $32 MILLION DOLLAR MAN PUMMELS THE SMALL TOWN GIRL

Letterman and McClellan

I disapprove of Bush because he spent too much money (a drop in the bucket it would turn out, when compared to that Obama fellow.) But Cheney and Bush took the defense of our country, and the West, seriously. Letterman cannot even concoct a half-baked conspiracy theory. How is it again, that the oil companies benefitted from the Iraq War?

Dave is like so many other Dems in that he knows who he is supposed to hate but does not know why. His muttering about privatizing the military and replacing them with Haliburton. So what, Dave? Doesn't that mean that he's taken soldiers out of harm's way (and replaced them with despicable Haliburton employees?)

McClellan provides the perfect backdrop to deliver the unbridled silliness. Two manifestations of Judas. McClellan betrayed Bush. Letterman betrayed his audience. No wonder you're in third place in the ratings, Dave.

Letterman Trashes Palin, Strokes Obama.

Everyone knows Palin's an idiot. The media elite did everything in their power to get that message across. Dave shows the powers that be why he is worth $32 million (sure as hell ain't the ratings.)

Oprah Winfrey: Kingmaker.

I am as quick as anyone to dismiss the old media. Just two weeks ago Katie Couric scored the lowest ratings EVER for "CBS Evening News" and other news channels not named Fox are not doing so well either. "The Boston Globe" is on life support and it's fending off other rags for use of the ventilator. But just because the industry as a whole is doing poorly does not mean that everyone's doing poorly.

Oprah Winfrey is perhaps the most powerful woman in America, if not the world. Her role in Obama's success has been trumpeted but her influence might have gotten lost in the crowd. When 99% of the media sing from the Obama song book, it is easy to overlook the influence of one mighty voice. Not all endorsements are created equal.

Winfrey was a factor in the 2008 election and she will continue to be an influence on matters of public concern. The report is scholarly and dry and it's 59 pages long. But it does its job of spelling out the titanic influence of Oprah Winfrey.

An Open Letter to Sarah Palin

Sever all ties with the mainstream media. Please don't repeat the mistake your running mate, John McCain, made. He thought he could trust the media to be fair. That judgment, or rather that lack of judgment, cost him dearly.

If you bank on "New York Times" to be fair, you deserve to lose. Remember the innuendo The Gray Lady spread about the senator and a certain lobbyist? Facts be damned! Do you remember the sleazy tabloid hit pieces that NYT used to smear Cindy McCain? This was the same organization that killed a highly relevant ACORN story just weeks before the election. All the news that's fit to spike.

Governor, you are a lightning rod because you share the values, hopes and dreams of most Americans. For that reason, elitists hate you. The media elite hate you even more. These are people who profess their love for working people but tremble at the possibility of a blue collar person holding public office. They despise working people, people who come from working families, people from small towns, people who did not attend the right schools and worst of all, they despise outsiders. As in, people from outside The Beltway.

But please do not grow discouraged by the slings and arrows of outrageous media. The fact that they hate you--and yes, they do hate you--shows the rest of us that you are probably a good person and possibly a worthy presidential candidate. Now is the time to show the effete snobs just how obsolete they really are. In an era of blogs, websites and digital video, you don't need the mainstream media for publicity. You can reach your audience directly.

We were all taken aback by Letterman's comments. But why did you appear on "The Today Show" later in the week? Granted, you are a ratings boost, and giving NBC face time sends a message to CBS. But pitting the media against one another won't work for very long. They maintain their genteel rivalries, but they will never be enemies. The members of Meadowbrook Polo Club do not pummel the members of the Oakbrook Polo Club with their trusty mallets. They hammer away at a little white ball and sip champagne with their competitors afterward. You will always be that little white ball. Keep that in mind.

But you don't have to show up at the polo grounds. Don't sit down with them! They can have the same access to your speeches and town hall meetings that everyone else has. Let them Twitter and Facebook and search Youtube. Do not participate in your own crucifixion.

Ironically, the mainstream media might help you in the long run. There are plenty of voters--like me or instance--who are uncomfortable with terms like liberal and conservative but who will vote against big media in a heart beat. When our enemies find a new enemy, it rekindles our interest in public affairs.

"I didn't come here to earn your good opinion." Live by your words, Governor Palin. Stop trying to earn their good opinion. Remember your next line. "I came here to serve the people of this great country." The choice is obvious. Serve your country or earn the media's good opinion. You cannot do both.

An Open Letter to David Letterman

Dave, I was once a big fan of yours. You were my hero. You were bold. Irreverent. Unpredictable. You defied categorization. You took a stale medium and turned it on its ear.

It wasn't just that you were funny. Other people could make that claim. You were different. You were, well, Dave. We bonded with you. We loved you in a way that we did not love entertainers, especially TV stars.

In the 80's the Letterman cult was loyal and devoted and I was pretty close to a charter member. Your fans were not typical TV fans. We were more like Deadheads or Phishheads or Red Sox Nation. Perhaps the only TV cult that surpassed the Letterman cult--in theatrics if not in fervor--was the "Star Trek" cult. But Trekkies never loved Shatner the way we loved you. We really loved you, Dave.

Maybe you were an elitist pig all along but you were able to disguise it. Maybe that man of the people thing was one big sham. It wasn't just your humor, it was your courage. If it was a movie star, an NBC hack or a big shot of any kind, you Dave, knocked them off their pedestal. You were the kid who made rude comments about emperors' clothing. David Letterman: Man of the People.

But somewhere along the way, Dave, you lost your edge. Maybe it was success. Maybe it was money. Maybe it was boredom. An unmistakable bitterness set in that competed with your humor. You took shelter in formula. For whatever reason, Dave, you lost your courage.

No comedian ever rose to the top without courage. None of them get where they got by charting the course of lesser resistance. Unfortunately, when they reach the top they usually start playing it safe. They grow rich and fat and spineless. Pusillanimity is their constant companion.

When the most pompous, the most pampered, the most inflated, the least analyzed, the least scrutinized, the least inspected, and yes, the least tested superstar in history emerged on the scene, the Dave we had grown to know and love was not there to greet him. You sold us out, Dave. You joined the legion of poltroonish cocksuckers. It is hard to imagine a vintage 85 Letterman taking Obama's engorged member to the lower depths of his esophagus. It is hard to imagine the angry young Dave wiping the jism from his lips and studying it under the moonlight. It is hard to imagine the NBC Dave savoring a septic peanut and proclaiming to the world that it tastes like cheese cake. But this is the Dave we have come to know. Dave, the slayer of superstars, had become a superstar. There are no clowns on Mount Olympus.

Dave, if your obsequiousness was nauseating for its cowardice, your attacks on Sarah Palin (to say nothing of her 14 year old daughter) were ruthlessly emetic. Somewhere along the way, simple cowardice was not enough for you. Yours was conspicuous cowardice. Contemptuous cowardice. Divert your eyes because it hurts to watch cowardice. Dave, you have morphed into a pussy. A wuss. A twit. A flit. An empty vessel. A wimp. Ah, but you could still toss your chamber pot at the peasants with the best in Hollywood.

Dave, your comments hurt in a way that Sean Penn and Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck can never hurt. Those people were always smug cocksuckers. They will always be smug cocksuckers. They live for the purpose of cultivating and flaunting their well-honed sense of superiority. Of course, they will always side with fellow elitists. Elitism is their very essence. But Dave, you were the antidote to the smug cocksucker. For a while, you really were the voice of the people.

There is something sadly ironic about your trashing Sarah Palin. That is, Palin 2008 came closer to capturing the spirit of Letterman 1984, than anyone, including the 2008 Letterman. It is easy to imagine a premenopausal Letterman pointing out that the man who would be king spent years wandering the streets with no actual responsibilities. It is not hard to imagine Dave in his prime poking fun of a man of marginal achievement writing two autobiographies. And yes, the Dave we grew up with would have had a field day with the hokey-ass styrofoam Greek columns. Palin 2008 had not yet lost her courage.

I cannot entirely stop loving you, Dave. You were my hero and when the mob ridicules my favorite has been, I am quick to remind them that you were once the funniest man in the world. But Dave, watching you now is like watching another has been, the formerly formidable Muhammad Ali. These days Ali walks like a butterfly and talks like a bee. Kind of like your monologues. But do remember, there is a major distinction between you two has beens. Ali never lost his courage and as a result, he stayed too long. You Dave, abandoned your courage, and because of that, you stayed too long.

It's time to hang it up, Dave. Go home and count all of your money. But do go home. And don't come back. You fucking sell out.
