Media Monday: The Glenn Beck Fallout

When it seems our news media cannot be sillier, they outdo themselves. Glenn Beck threw them a curve with his "Restoring Honor" rally. I have to admit that I don't understand what the rally was all about. But I don't feel the need to interject snide remarks at every turn.

This calm before the storm reminds me of the week or two before the ongoing backlash against Sarah Palin. She had displayed the audacity to point out flaws in The Chosen One at the Republican National Convention. There was a dog staring at the gramophone moment where the press looked for leadership. A couple of weeks later the press had circled its wagons and had launched an ongoing character assassination that follows Palin to this day.

Give them a couple of weeks and the campaign against Beck will run in high gear. Hate speech, blah blah blah. For now, they are still searching for an Achilles Heel. Beck has a few of them and if you don't know about them yet, you soon will.

You can't simply report the news, can you? You have to editorialize. You're one the reasons Beck's there in the first place, because you traded journalism for idealogy. If Obama ever stops suddenly, your nose will be right up his butt.

Then, of course, there is Palin, the pompom girl for pep rallies like Saturday's, telling the crowd that she's an even better American than we knew because, well, she raised a combat veteran.

She did. Her son fights for his country and what he believes and good for him. But really Palin should have been talking about her daughter Bristol, on her way to "Dancing With the Stars" in the fall. You want to trace Palin's DNA, you don't have to look further than Levi Johnston's former squeeze.

I love to see the mainstream media in a bad mood. Perhaps Glenn Beck's greatest achievement is making the mainstream press readable.

Observations on Glenn Beck's Rally

Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" Rally is on the TV in the livingroom. Can I summarize it? It's brilliant political theater. This is stealth politics. Politics wihtout the overt political warning. It is clever.

Glenn Beck has hit a new stride. Is this his high water mark? I don't think so. He is becoming an idiom unto himself.

Ugh! Blogger would not let me post this and did not even save my work. They are usually reliable.

See if I can recollect my thoughts. My favorite speaker was of course, Sarah Palin. I plead guilty to liking her and hope she runs for the presidency. She is always a bright spot.

The pundits seem to be asking the same question of Beck: What now? For starters, I think he might be ready for prime time. If he maintains his health and his eyesight, he is destined for big things.

Real big.
