NRA Backed Candidate Wins Special Election in Connecticut

Something is going on here. Republican Sam Belsito won a special election to fill a 53rd District General Assembly seat in Connecticut. Two things stand out. Belsito won by 17 % in a district that has not elected a Republican since 1972 and he enjoyed the backing of the NRA.
"This was the first chance we had to put in a legislator who cares about the Constitution,'' said Brian Saucier of Windham, a member of both the National Rifle Association and the Connecticut Citizens Defense League.
Jerri MacMillian of Essex, another NRA member who volunteered to help Belsito, said she spoke with many voters in the district. "The 2nd Amendment was driving their vote,'' she said
To make matters worse for Connecticut Democrats Rick Perry was in state to woo the entire gun industry to Texas.
Multiple gun manufacturers from the state are scheduled to hear a sales pitch Monday on why they should up and leave. Their suitor is Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican and avid sportsman who has invited reporters for target practice and addressed the National Rifle Association convention.
The courtship will take place at the Max Downtown, a Hartford restaurant mere blocks from the Capitol and the office of Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, the face of a new state gun law considered the strictest in the nation.

Don't get too excited. Even with Belsito's win Democrats still hold a 151 to 53 advantage in the General Assembly.
