War is like crack for presidents. It confers instant gravitas, catapulting them to respectability, bypassing all station stops. They get to make macho pronouncements on a topic where every utterance is seen as august. 

On the other hand, Trump's Syrian misadventure is immoral, violates every promise he ran on and could sink his presidency. 

Left to his own devices, uncontaminated by Washington group-think, Trump gets it right. 

Back in 2013, when President Obama was being egged on to attack Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack far more sweeping than this latest one, Trump tweeted: 

-- Aug. 29, 2013: 

"What will we get for bombing Syria besides more debt and a possible long term conflict? Obama needs Congressional approval.” 

-- Aug. 31, 2013: 

"Be prepared, there is a small chance that our horrendous leadership could unknowingly lead us into World War III.” 

-- Sept. 1, 2013: 

"If the U.S. attacks Syria and hits the wrong targets, killing civilians, there will be worldwide hell to pay. Stay away and fix broken U.S.” 

On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly stated that he had no interest in starting "World War III over Syria," saying, "We have bigger problems than Assad." His policy position was: "Let Syria and ISIS fight. I look at Assad -- and Assad looks better than the other side.” 

Trump was right on every point. 

Assad is one of the least bad leaders in the entire Middle East. He's not a murderous thug like Saddam, has no rape rooms, isn't into jihad, protects Christians and is fighting ISIS. He provided us with intelligence on al-Qaida after 9/11. He does not have crazy Islamic police slapping women around or throwing gays off buildings. (That would be our beloved ally, Saudi Arabia.) 

Trump was also correct about Assad's opponents being far worse, containing large helpings of both ISIS and al-Qaida.

Ann Coulter, Michael Savage and now Pat Buchanan. For a variety of reasons I used to be repulsed by all three of these people. Water under the bridge, I guess. They all seem like bold and forthright individuals now. None of the "bold leadership and decisive tone" horseshit talking points from these people. No Hannity-style ass kissing.  Just stating and restating the obvious.

Now, that gas attack was an atrocity, a war crime, and pictures of its tiny victims are heart-rending. But 400,000 people have died in Syria’s civil war, among them thousands of children and infants.

Have they been killed by Assad’s forces? Surely, but also by U.S., Russian, Israeli and Turkish planes and drones — and by Kurds, Iranians, Hezbollah, al-Qaida, ISIS, U.S.-backed rebels and Shiite militia.

When it comes to foreign affairs, Trump has been all over the map, which is why I find myself agreeing with Jonah Goldberg at National Review when he said that, “The strike on Syria is the single best proof that Trump has no overriding commitment to any ideological position.”

Donald Trump just calls that being “flexible.”

After eight years of Obama’s ineptitude, it’s easy to see how people would crave a man of action. But action simply for action’s sake is no better than inaction. In fact, wars have been started that way.

I can live with the one missile strike on Syria, basically to show that for all of Obama’s embarrassments and failures, he is long gone and just an anal wart on history. I do not, and WILL not support a war with Syria. Again, as I said before the missile strikes, Syria is Russia’s problem, not ours. If any country should be on Trump’s radar right now, it should be Iran.

If Trump is going to let Kusher run the war room in the White House and go full George W. Bush on us, then screw him. He will got slaughtered in the 2020 election and Republicans will lose their majorities in the Senate and the House.

Until then, I’ll hold my fire, because at this point it’s just pure speculation. But everyone needs to keep an eye on Kushner.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. John McCain cheered the Trump administration’s decision Thursday to strike the Assad regime, as did Syrian rebel groups which seek to impose Sharia law.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted a “key figure” in the Army of Islam, or Jaysh al-Islam, as saying, “Hitting one airbase is not enough, there are 26 airbases that target civilians.” The AFP article just identified Jaysh al-Islam as a rebel group and didn’t point out that the organization seeks to replace the Assad regime with a government ruled by Sharia law.

MSNBC also reported that the rebels Ahrar al-Sham “welcome US intervention through surgical strikes that would deter regime capabilities to kill civilians.” The U.S. considers Ahrar al-Sham one of the most effective rebel groups in Syria, according to a report from Stanford University. The group also worked with ISIS until 2014, is sympathetic with Al-Qaeda, and seeks to create an Islamic state in Syria.

All of this is on the generals. Maybe Bannon was the one fighting with the generals, the only one standing against war, and now he’s gone. It’s generals who rushed world powers in WWI, and it’s happening again. Their powers increase with war. They shouldn’t want war, they should want peace.

President Trump came on the air with me and said if he was elected, he could talk to Russia even before he took office. That’s what making peace is about.

The Dems turned it into a crime and want to impeach him over it. The generals have gotten to him and turned him from peace with Russia. And the people standing in the way of war, like Steve Bannon, are being shown the door.

One of the overlooked moments of the last presidential debate was Hillary's proposal to create a no-fly zone in Syria. In other words, we would shoot down Russian planes and start World War III to protect ISIS.

Of The Dozens Of Reasons For Not Starting A War With Syria, One Reason Jumps Off The Page

Almost a year since four Americans were slaughtered in Libya, we still don't know the details of events of that terrible evening. A lot of dots have not connected themselves. What do we know?

We know that there has been a detailed and to date successful cover-up. We cannot pinpoint the president's involvement, lack of involvement, indifference or for that matter, the company he kept as Americans died. We also know that the president and all of his administration lied--there is no other word. Journalists will not use that word but the falsehoods were intentional and unusually sinister--to the world about the motives and nature of the attack. There was no spontaneous mob and the non-existent mob was not motivated by a Youtube video. But the administration lied and repeated the lie every chance they got.

This administration has zero credibility. No administration has lied so frequently or so boldly as The Obama Administration. It might have been different in places like Yugoslavia but in the good old USA, no political body had ever successfully hijacked the national press. Not until Obama came to town. Obama was given a license to deceive and he his administration is emboldened with each passing day. The Benghazi cover-up was a series of lies the media helped advance but we could list dozens of other topics where the news media facilitated the administration's duplicity. Now, they want us to rubber stamp yet another war. I think not.

I for one retain doubt that Assad has used chemical weapons but if he has, it is not a red line. Putin called John Kerry a liar regarding his comments about Al Qaedah. I don't know if Kerry is bearing false witness now but what difference does it make at this point? This administration has lied so habitually that it becomes a waste of time to sort out the nuggets of veracity. Kerry has joined an administration he knows to be rotten to the core. Beware the company you keep.

Putin is blaming the chemical attacks on the Al Qaedah-backed rebels. By any measure, Putin is more truthful than Obama. This administration has exhausted its quota of lies but now we are asked to participate in this wag the dog publicity stunt. I can't believe we are even taking this request seriously.
