How outraged were the 90% of Americans who President Obama assured us favored expansion of federal background checks to purchase firearms? Well, 39% expressed either joy or relief at the failure of the Senate bill. It's true that a plurality, yes, that's less than a majority, Mr. President, of 47% expressed either anger or disappointment. A 8% plurality in favor of the legislation is scarcely a mandate and not the sort of thing that turns red congressional districts blue. These data are from a Washington Post-Pew poll.
