The Return Of The 57 State Country

In 2008, candidate Obama stated that he had been to 57 states on his campaign. It could have been a trivial gaffe. We all say stupid things sometimes but we don't have an army of microphones stalking us.

Another viewpoint is that Barack Obama's intellect has always been and always will be over-inflated. Pensive expressions and the dramatic biting of one's lip does not necessarily equate to intellectualism but you can never tell that to an Obama worshiper.

Exaggerated miscue or over-hyped intellect? Those two schools of thought seemed to have locked horns in eternal struggle. Then Congressman Keith Ellison complicates the story.  In late 2016, Ellison stats that the Dems need to develop a 57 state strategy.

The following video is a throwaway but please observe Congress Ellison at about the 0:16 mark making the case for a sweeping 57 state strategy. Huh?

Curbing my wisecracking tendencies for a moment, I ask is "57 state" some sort of inside politics slogan? Does it take into consideration our 50 states plus DC, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands? That brings us to 56 "states". The US claims 10 unpopulated territories such as Midway Atoll (actually populated by 40-60 government workers). Do these territories collectively constitute a seventh state? IDK.

Snopes was all over the clarification of Obama's 57 state blunder and assured one and all that this was not a reference to the 57 Muslim states scattered across the globe. The fact that Keith Ellison, America's first openly Muslim Congressman, would also make a 57 state declaration, has yet to be addressed by Snopes or anyone else.

57 states? Maybe I need a new atlas.
