THUGs: The Helpful Union Guys

SEIU is not the only union to fall victim to a RICO indictment. Iron Workers local 401 in Philly has had a long tradition of violence and intimidation. Surprisingly, the Obama DOJ has put its foot down.

Members used arson, vandalism, sabotage and occasional violence to retaliate against those who chose to use non-union workers, the indictment says. Local 401 members were also allegedly behind the arson attack on a Quaker meeting house just days before Christmas 2012, which resulted in $500,000 in damage. The indictment also accuses two ironworkers of participating in a 2010 baseball-bat assault on non-union workers building a Toys R Us store in King of Prussia.

Kudos to the National Review for their ongoing investigation into this matter. My opinion is that alternative media spend too much time with opinion and not enough time on investigative journalism. Then again, the MSM has largely abandoned investigative journalism.

Why only the iron workers? I came across only one photo of the vandalism and that set off an alarm. Of course you can't expect the media to get much right if it goes beyond he said she said but what was represented to be structural iron was actually metal stud.
According to some accounts the vandalism happened on union jobs. It doesn't excuse it, for that matter it makes it worse, but this looks like a long running jurisdictional dispute between the carpenters and the iron workers with the contractor and the property owner caught in the middle. Metal studs came along in response to fire codes and replaced the the traditional 2x4 framing. Not much changed for about 50 years until someone got the idea to increase the gauge of the metal studs. Now commercial buildings are built using traditional wood framing techniques but using the strengthened metal studs in lieu of structural iron and the iron workers are having a duck. Metal studs have their limits but on small structures such as strip malls they are much cheaper. There is no need to fab the job up off site as is done with structural iron as studs can be cut to length with snips. This is just progress. BTW when natural gas becomes the preferred fuel at power plants those plants can be built without boiler makers. That cracks me up! To get maximum efficiency though the exhaust from the gas turbine would be used to boil water and employ a secondary steam turbine so boiler worker will get a few crumbs.
