R.I.P. Possum

I guess the drinking finally did kill him but it took probably 65 years. George Jones has been around as long as I can remember and while I never thought of him as being a star I certainly enjoyed his work. In a sense George Jones was more than a star. He was a permanent fixture in the lives of countless members of my generation. Anytime one turned the radio on George Jones was singing or would do so shortly. We need not  exaggerate his talent nor to condemn his behavior but rather simply say that we will miss him.

I think of most country music people as basically good but flawed. With George Jones it is hard to look past the flaws. The savage beatings that he inflicted on Tammy Wynette--and artfully covered up by his people--eclipse just about everything else he ever did.

Still, George Jones' iconic status cannot be disputed.
